LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I have been reflecting on Memorial Day for the past few days, and just felt that I needed to write this letter about my thoughts. Memorial Day has been with us since 1868, and was set aside to honor the graves of those who gave there lives during the Civil War. Ever since it has been a day to honor the veterans who gave their lives in defense of this country. They fought and died in places no one ever heard of to keep our country safe. We have become a great nation because of these sacrifices and the sacrifices of all our veterans. How soon we forget.

Today Memorial Day means the beginning of summer fun. We go camping and fishing and picnicking and traveling, but one hardly ever hears about our veterans. How soon we forget.

I am afraid that we as a nation celebrate all of our freedoms and forget about our responsibilities to keep our nation strong. It is embarrassing to me when I hear about voter turnout of 30 percent. There are countries around the world where citizens risk death to vote, and ninety percent turn out to vote. Here we risk nothing and can't be bothered.
