On Nov. 3, Father Joe Miksch, the Archbishop George Lucus, and Decon Louis Dohman officiated a celebratory mass for the 100th year anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the current St. Joseph Church in Platte Center.
During the mass, special guest Gov. Jim Pillen shared his memories of growing up in the church and attending the catholic school that was once in Platte Center. After mass, parishioners enjoyed a catered meal and socialized throughout the afternoon.
The following is a historical recall of the laying of the cornerstone, 100 years ago. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1924, in spite of a heavily overcast sky and brisk cold northwest wind, the people assembled for the dedication of the beautiful and spacious new St. Joseph’s Church. This was the fourth church built in the history of the Parish.
