Plant related organizations select plants to be designated as the year of to ring in the New Year. It focuses attention on specific plants and helps us learn more about plants we may already be growing.
Plants are not only pretty and functional, many have interesting histories and facts associated with them. In my book, this makes them a little more interesting to grow. As an example, Spiderwort is also known as cow slobbers and snot weed due to the consistency of its sap. Now doesn’t that make it more fun to grow?
I diverge. Back to my topic. When we hear an organization has designated a plant for its year of program, we might assume it will be a great plant to grow. While it likely is, not all plants do well in all parts of the country or in all landscapes due to differences in soil, weather, and microclimates.
