The speech tournaments in Nebraska have been over since March 18, but there are five students at Humphrey High School who have kept working on their speeches in order to prepare for the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions which will be held at Chanhassen High School in Chanhassen, Minn., from May 12-14.

In order to qualify for the tournament, students must have placed in the top three or top six at qualifying tournaments, depending on their size. In the smaller meets, students must have placed in the top three while larger meets allowed for the top six to qualify. Students must have received two bids in order to be an automatic qualifier. Students could have also qualified on an at-large basis, as long as their placements in three tournaments added up to less than 10.

For example, if a student placed 1st at one meet, 3rd at another meet, and 4th at a third meet, they could qualify for NIETOC.
